MERV ratings, smoke, and airflow
Filters are rated on the MERV scale, an industry standard rather than a manufacturer claim. Low ratings catch lint and coarse dust; the middle of the scale starts catching pollen, mould spores, and pet dander; the upper residential range is where the fine particles in wildfire smoke are addressed.
The catch is airflow. A denser filter resists the air passing through it, and a one-inch slot cannot take a high-MERV cartridge without starving the blower. The usual fix is a deeper cabinet, four or five inches, so a higher-rated filter has the surface area to breathe through.

Frequently asked questions
What MERV rating do I need for wildfire smoke?
Smoke particles are fine enough that the coarse filters shipped with most systems do little about them; the upper residential end of the MERV scale is where they are addressed. The limit is what your equipment can pull air through.
Will a better furnace filter help my allergies?
It can reduce how much pollen, dust, and pet dander circulates, which is what people notice. It does nothing about allergens in carpet or bedding, and it only works while the fan runs.
Is a portable HEPA purifier as good as whole-home filtration?
They solve different problems. A portable unit cleans the room it stands in; ducted filtration treats every room the system serves whenever the fan runs. In a smoky week, plenty of households use both.
How often should I change my furnace filter?
A one-inch filter usually needs replacing every one to three months; a deep media cartridge often lasts six to twelve. Pets, renovation dust, and a smoky summer shorten that. If you cannot see light through it, change it.
How much does an air filtration upgrade cost?
Less than most of the work on this site, though we publish no figure for it. A better filter in a cabinet that already fits is the cheap end; a new deep cabinet and a resealed plenum is the other, and a HEPA bypass unit sits above both. We measure the system first — that visit costs nothing — and put the number in writing.
