Why mini-splits fit Island houses
A ductless system is an outdoor compressor and one or more wall-mounted indoor heads, joined by a refrigerant line set that needs only a small hole through the wall. That is the whole appeal in older Island housing: no ducts to run, no bulkheads, and no ceiling height lost in a 1950s bungalow.
Head placement matters more than which model you buy. A head heats the space it can see, so a house closed off room by room needs more zones than an open plan of the same size. Outdoors, we keep the unit off the salt-spray side where we can, clear of roof runoff, and within what a strata council allows.

Can I get a heat pump if my house has no ductwork?
Yes — that is exactly what a ductless system is for. One outdoor unit feeds wall-mounted heads through a small line-set penetration, so nothing has to be routed through walls or ceilings.
How much does a ductless mini-split cost to install?
A single-zone system is the cheapest way into a heat pump, below a ducted install, but we do not publish a figure for either. Zone count moves the number most, since each indoor head is more equipment and more labour, followed by how far the line set has to run and how awkward the outdoor unit is to place. The visit is free and we fix the price in writing after walking the house.
How many indoor heads does my house need?
It depends on how the house is divided, not on its square footage. An open main floor often runs well on a single head, while bedrooms down a closed hallway need a zone each.
Does a mini-split cool the house as well as heat it?
Yes — the same unit runs in reverse in summer, which is why mini-splits tend to replace electric baseboard heaters outright rather than sit alongside them.
Can I put a mini-split in a strata unit?
Often, but the strata council decides where an outdoor unit may be mounted and what noise limits apply. Get that approval in writing first, and we work to the placement it allows.
How long does a ductless installation take?
A single-zone install is usually a one-day job. Multi-zone systems and long line runs take longer, and so does any placement that needs bracketing or a lift — the written quote sets out the day count before we start.
