Which one your house actually needs
Most homes on the east side of Vancouver Island have the opposite problem from the one humidifier advertising describes. The distinction matters because the equipment is not interchangeable: a dehumidifier removes moisture and gives back a little heat, a humidifier does the reverse, and fitting the wrong one makes the original complaint worse. Do I need a humidifier or a dehumidifier on Vancouver Island?
Far more often a dehumidifier. The winter here is mild and wet rather than cold and dry, so the common complaints — condensation, mildew, a damp crawlspace — are all excess moisture. Humidifiers make sense in houses that heat hard through a cold snap or run a wood stove, and that is the minority.
Why do my windows stream with condensation every winter?
Because the glass is the coldest surface in the room, so indoor moisture reaches its dew point there first. It is a humidity problem showing up on a window rather than a window problem: bring the moisture in the house down, ventilate more, or both, and the glass dries up.
What indoor humidity level should I be aiming for?
Most guidance lands somewhere between about 40 and 60 per cent relative humidity, and toward the lower end in a cold snap. The practical test is simpler than the number: if the windows are running, the setpoint is too high for how cold the glass currently is.
Will a dehumidifier fix the mould in my crawlspace?
Only if the moisture is arriving through the air. If there is standing water, bare soil with no vapour barrier over it, or a dryer or bath fan discharging under the house, the dehumidifier just runs continuously against a source that never stops. We look for the source before quoting equipment.
How much does a whole-home dehumidifier cost installed?
We publish no figure for it, though a ducted unit is a considerably bigger job than a standalone one dropped into a crawlspace. The final number depends on where the unit can be mounted, how far the condensate has to be run and whether it needs a pump, and whether it ties into ductwork that already exists.
